The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor Vijay, has come under fire after a controversial Iftar event held in Chennai. The Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamath has lodged a formal complaint with the Chennai Police Commissioner, accusing the event of insulting Muslims by allowing rowdy individuals to disrupt the peaceful gathering.
Syed Kous, the treasurer of the Sunnat Jamath, was vocal in his criticism of the event. He pointed out that the Iftar, a significant religious occasion during Ramadan, was marred by the participation of people who were neither fasting nor showing the appropriate respect for the religious significance of the occasion. The Jamath also took issue with the behavior of the event’s foreign security personnel, who allegedly mistreated attendees.
While the complaint has drawn attention to the mismanagement of the event, it has also raised broader questions about the use of religious gatherings for political purposes. Vijay’s involvement in the event, and his growing political influence through TVK, has led some to wonder whether the event was intended to strengthen his political base ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu elections.
