Maulana Razvi Issues Fatwa Against Vijay for Allegedly Mocking Ramadan Traditions

The Iftar party hosted by actor and TVK leader Thalapathy Vijay has triggered major controversy. What was meant to be a show of unity and inclusivity has now snowballed into a nationwide debate. Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi from Bareilly issued a religious fatwa, stating that Vijay had insulted Islam by inviting people who were neither fasting nor respectful of religious norms. He accused Vijay of attempting to manipulate Muslim sentiments for political benefit.

This criticism is not isolated. The Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamath lodged a police complaint, alleging that Vijay’s party included “drunkards and rowdies,” completely out of line with the sanctity of Ramadan. The cleric also referenced Vijay’s portrayal of Muslims in films, notably in The Beast, and urged the Muslim community to reject him both politically and socially. The backlash reveals growing discomfort within minority groups over what they see as performative politics by film personalities transitioning into politics.
