Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, better known as Vijay, faced intense scrutiny following his Iftar event in Chennai, organized as part of his political outreach under the banner of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The event was meant to celebrate Ramadan but was met with backlash from the Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamath, who filed a formal complaint accusing the actor of disrespecting the Muslim community.
Allegations of Mismanagement and Disrespect
The complaint highlighted several points of contention, including the attendance of individuals who were not fasting and did not observe the religious practices associated with Ramadan. This, according to Syed Kous of the Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamath, caused offense to the Muslim attendees, who saw it as a violation of the sacred traditions of Ramadan.
The security arrangements at the event were also a point of contention, with Kous accusing Vijay’s foreign security personnel of treating attendees with disrespect. The complaint claims that the security guards behaved in a manner that was rude and unprofessional, further adding fuel to the growing resentment.
Vijay’s Political Strategy
As the leader of TVK, Vijay is seen by some as a politician on the rise, aiming to garner support from diverse communities in Tamil Nadu. His involvement in religious events, like the Iftar gathering, is viewed by many as a political strategy to strengthen his base ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu elections. His critics, however, argue that his actions are driven by the desire for political advantage rather than a genuine interest in religious unity.
