IIT Madras launches new School of Sustainability; check new programmes

IIT Madras School of Sustainability plans to launch an Integrated Dual Degree Program (IDDD) on Sustainability in the next three to five years.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has launched a new School of Sustainability today, October 7. The school seeks to teach new and interdisciplinary courses on sustainability, synergize research to tackle grand challenges and provide a platform to host events and showcase technologies that can help drive both practice and policy.
The new School of Sustainability has been conceptualized as a Centre of Excellence and it will bring together faculty members from across departments and research centers of the Institute.
In addition to offering a minor course in sustainability and an interdisciplinary masters programme in the subject, the new school also plans to provide a variety of sustainability related capacity building programmes to working professionals in online as well as in person.
The school’s activities, according to an IIT Madras statement, said will focus on basic scientific research, technology development and transfer, real world project implementation and policy advisory activities.
Highlighting its teaching and research initiatives, the IIT Madras School of Sustainability said that apart from the minor course in sustainability set to be launched in 2024, the school plans to launch an Integrated Dual Degree Program (IDDD) on Sustainability in the next three to five years.
Also the school has identified four key areas of research and development – decarbonization, human settlements, modelling and scenario development, and behavioural and industrial change, that school will undertake basic scientific research, translational and product development, pilot implementations and policy advisory.
In the long term, the School of Sustainability will support the nation, industry, and global citizens in areas including the development of well-rounded professionals who will lead the world in building resilient and sustainable infrastructure for industries and communities and acting as a platform to catalyze the change to a low-carbon world by supporting the translation of research and knowledge to products and services.
